McQ's BAKER'S DOZEN 2009

SONG OF THE YEAR
1. Bear - The Antlers:  (Explicit) In the breeziest of dream pop packages comes one of the heaviest songs of this or any year.  The centerpiece to The Antler's equally devasting narrative full length Hospice, there's been much debate in the blogosphere as to whether the characters in this song are the primary characters profiled in the rest of the album, or a different couple, presented as dramatic counterpoint.

I'm firmly in the second camp, but where one stands, or even if one has heard the album in full is no barrier to experiencing the impact of this song, in which a shallow young male not ready for the rigors of parenthood badgers and finally convinces his pregnant girlfriend to have an abortion, despite her own desire to keep the child.  The simple back and forth chorus that gives equal weight to her monumental plea for responsibility "We're too old!" and his trivial, not ready to stop partying counterpoint of "We're not old at all!" still sends chills down my spin, even though it might be the catchiest chorus of the year.

Went with just the song here instead of the metaphoric official video.  This is a track people should visualize on their own terms.
