A STRANGE ARRANGEMENT - Mayer Hawthorne (2010)

Dying for a Motown fix?

Well park your ears right here on this unassuming yet delightful full length debut from Michigan DJ turned velvet-voiced, neo-soul crooner Andrew Cohen, aka Mayer Hawthorne.

Aside from a couple of the ballads so syrupy as to be nausea-inducing, this is a spot on, highly entertaining evocation of the mid-sixties sounds of Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, Holland-Dozier-Holland-penned Tempations, and Superfly-styled Curtis Mayfield.

It won't blow you away, but you'll be tapping your toes near every minute, and a couple of the uptempo numbers, especially Maybe So, Maybe No and the Mayfield-inspire The Ills, really cook.

Status: Solid Recommend
