McQ's Best Of 2007 Recommended Mixes

2007 would be the last time I tried to assemble the collection before year's end, and due to the time crunch, I ended up bailing on the mix set and punting several albums into the following year.

It also marked the debut of Nancy's Favorites, which has since become an annual fan favorite.

Still, most of the best albums from a very solid 2007 are represented here, including Of Montreal's Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?, Radioheads In Rainbows, LCD Soundsystem's zenith Sound Of Silver, Nick Cave's hysterical side project Grinderman, Spoon's lively Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, and Patty Griffin's brutally under appreciated Children Running Through.

As always, each individual mix is designed to be burnable to a single 70mb CD at a 128 kbit sample rate.

Here we go.

Volume 1 - Bubbalicious, Baby!:
One of my all-time favorites.  A super spirited collection of sugary, bubblegum pop.  Includes efforts from Apples In Stereo, Peter Bjorn & John, Luna, Midlake, Nellie McKay and more.

Volume 2 - Back To The Ooze:
Primordial lust seeps from the grooves of this heavy, bluesy, raunchy collection of tracks from the likes of Grinderman, The White Stripes, Tom Waits, Dungen, Kings of Leon, and Wolf & Cub.

Volume 3 - Americana:
Iron & Wine, Patty Griffin, Ted Leo, Okkervil River, Solomon Burke, Bright Eyes, The Ike Reilly Assassination, Band Of Horses, Josh Ritter, Miranda Lambert and more all contribute to this rich heartland rock tapestry.  Another one of my all-time favorites.

Volume 4 - Quirkazoids:
Indie's oddest birds do their thing in this broadly eclectic mix. Offers choice cuts from Subtle, Andrew Bird, Dan Deacon, Menomena, Deerhoof, Blitzen Trapper, and Of Montreal, including their 2007 song of the year, the remarkable The Past Is A Grotesque Animal.

Volume 5 - Nancy's Favorites:
Nancy's inaugural edition, and imho, still her best.

Volume 6 - Hips & Fists: The Dance-Punk Revolution:
White boys get down in this lively, funky collection of dance-rock winners.  Includes efforts from LCD Soundsystem, White Rabbit, !!!, Fijuya & Miyagi, Justice, Simian Mobile Disco, Junior Senior, Van Sudenfeld, and The Klaxons.

Volume 7 - Murky Wilsons And Other Like-Minded Ilk:
The Aught's decade-long Beach Boys obsession seemed to peak in 2007, so I grouped those artists and a few others that seemed to fit here.  Includes songs from Panda Bear, The Besnard Lakes, Pop Levi, Spoon, Joanna Newsom, Beirut and more.

Volume 8 - Cheesy Beyond Belief:
Though possessing possibly the weakest average track quality of any mix I've ever assembled, this collection of material from mostly pompous emo and arena-rock acts somehow holds together.  Includes tracks from My Chemical Romance, The Twilight Singers, Muse, Gogol Bordello, Dungen, Queens Of The Stone Age, and Eisley.

Volume 9 - New Affiliates Of The Half-Formed:
2007 saw a number of releases play with spare, restrictive instrumentation to often stunning results, and selects from those releases are grouped here.  Includes songs from Radiohead, Low, Califone, Casiotones For The Painfully Alone, Explosions In The Sky, and Eluvium.

Volume 10 - Best Of The Rest:
A dumping ground for my very favorite tracks from my next favorite fifteen or so 2007 releases after I realized I would have to pare the 2007 collection down from an originally planned sixteen volumes to ten due to time constraints.  Most of those unproduced volumes would show up in slightly altered form in the 2008 collection, minus the tracks I included here.
