THE BESNARD LAKES ARE THE ROARING NIGHT - The Besnard Lakes (2010)

Coming on like Pet Sounds era Beach Boys juiced up to obscene levels on late 60s/early 70s arena-rock steroids, Canada's The Besnard Lakes are classic home run sluggers...not hitting for a particularly high average, but guaranteed to knock it out of the park with a couple of at bats on each release.

At their best, as they are here on the compellingly woozy Albatross and the sledgehammer of a track And This Is What We Call Progress, their epic, dense, harmony-driven prog-rock crescendos can be positively enthralling.  At their worst, they can meander in the murk like nobody's business.

Both traits are on full display here, but overall, I like this record...a lot...probably even more than their fine 2007 effort The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horses.

In addition to the two tracks mentioned above, the back half of each of the two song suites are the album's highlights, though Land of Living Skies Pt. 2: The Living Skies takes a few minutes to get started before launching into a classic 70s-styled, almost Peter Framptonish jam.

So if your in the mood for something heavy, psychedelic and majorly anthemic, with excellent Beach Boy-styled vocals, give The Besnard Lakes Are The Roaring Night a listen.

Status: Solid Recommend.
