McQ's Favorite Albums Of 2017

Highest Recommends

1. American Dream - LCD Soundsystem: The mix leaves much to be desired compared to LCD's past releases, and the lyrical focus is much darker this time out, but on all other levels, American Dream is every bit the equal of the band's trio of earlier dance-rock classics. Read full review.

2. A Deeper Understanding - The War On Drugs: Though its songs are not quite as immediate as on breakthrough predecessor Lost In The Dream, and it's more Roxy Music Avalonish than rollicking Springsteen/Dylanish this time out,  A Deeper Understanding's instrumental passages are flat out inspired and provide an endless pool of masterful musical touches to sink into in what has to be one of the most magnificently produced and stunningly arranged albums of all-time. One of the greatest headphone listens ever released.
Intangibles: High
Cherry Pickers Best Bets: Up All Night, Pain, Nothing To Find, Thinking Of A Place.

19. The Witch - Pumarosa: Sonically fantastic goth/post-punk/arena-rock/art-rock hybrid is ceaselessly engaging on an instrumental/performance level, staying true for the most part to a moody, pagan-y trance rock center but throws in lots of eclectic curves and several songs have absolutely tremendous endings. Lyrics are not a strong suit, but for a band this talented with sound and mood, never becomes an issue. Especially liked Priestess, with it unrelenting trance groove and phenomenal sax entry late, the Pyramid Song-like Lion's Den, and the album's most pop-like number My Gruesome Loving Friend but there is a ton to take in here and a ton to love. Intangibles - Above Average. Cherry Pickers Best Bets: Dragonfly, Honey, Priestess, Lion's Den, My Gruesome Loving Friend.
